just look up -> Boxed scope or ex display? (22/2/2007 6:52:42 PM)

Hi all,

I've decided ... I'm getting a Skywatcher 8" Explorer (can't wait!) but in looking for a supplier, I've found one that's offered me £50 off a shopfloor display model.  I haven't seen it yet, but I'm told it's in excellent condition except for some scratches on the scope body.
My question is, should I go for it or is there a risk of other, unseen damage/problems and for the sake of saving £50, would I be better off getting boxed new?

Any thoughts anyone?

Regards  John

Personally i like to get new in sealed packs if possible if and when i do,but theres a lot to be said on saving good chunks of cash[:D]

Hi John, I am incredibly fussy with my equipment (it all looks absolutely brand new even after 2.1/2 years) and for £50.00 on a £535.00 HEQ5 deal (£375.00 on an EQ5 deal) the scratches would have to be very very slight to get my interest! I acknowledge that I am OTT in this regard though .....

It is relatively easy to scratch the OTA when revolving it in the tube rings to get a good eye position on the focus tube BUT this can be avoided by keeping the felt in the tube rings dust-free (told you I was OTT!).

If this really is a display unit, it would be difficult for it to come to too much harm although dust on the mirror will have accumulated no doubt - this in itself is not the end of the world but any other marks on the mirror(s) could be bad news.

Either way, I hope you will be pleased with whatever you buy and SkyWatcher (no relation to my alias) is very good value equipment.

Is it the EQ5 or the HEQ5 mount? (both of which should come with a 25mm EP, 10mm EP and 2X Barlow lens by the way!)

Hi both,

Having looked at both, whilst i would like the HEQ5 I'm going without the H.  I'll be motorising the mount later in the year, hopefully, and then see how I get on.  By all accounts, it's a nice bit of kit, powered or not.

Any other advice gratefully received lol

Hi John

I think I'm inclined to agree with Steve, £50 off is not, IMO, a mega deal for something that's been pushed and poked around by a multitude of inquisitive fingers.

Also, if the mirror had gathered dust, which it almost certainly will have done, then if this had not been removed with care, there could be scratches on the mirror, which basically the 'heart' of the scope.

I guess the 'bottom line' is, if its close enough to go along and have a good look at it, then maybe. However, if you would be buying it 'on spec', then I wouldn't. However, that's just my personal opinion.

Hi John

Would tend to be wary having seen some display scopes.  one was actually outside a shop in a busy high street with all lens caps off [:(]!!!  For the sake of £50 off i would personally go for a new one.
