Any recommendations for Mac astronomy software. Freeware, shareware or commercial, I would be interested to find out what is rated highly by Mac users. Cheers Dave

Hi Dave, It depends on what you trying to achieve? Are you looking for planetaria, telescope control, webcam capture, image processing, etc...? From my limited experience, Starry Night Pro works reasonably well on my Mac. My Philips Toucam Pro II webcam also works (macam software), although the resolution is limited by lack of support from Philips to 320x240. I do all of my still-image processing using Photoshop CS2 which is powerful, but requires some effort. AVI processing is performed on my Windows desktop using Registax. That's all I use. If you've got a Mac that can run Windows then you're laughing. But that wasn't the question Cheers,

Anything and everything really, just trying to get a feel for what is available and how it compares to windows based software. If you've got a Mac that can run Windows then you're laughing. But that wasn't the question Windows on my Mac would more than likely make me cry rather than laugh!! Cheers Dave

Photoshop CS2, the most powerful post processing software available (see books: The New Astro Zone System for astro imaging by Ron Wodalski / Photoshop Astronomy by R Scott Ireland / Guide to Astrophotography with digital slr cameras by Jerry Lodriguss / software: photoshop plug-in Astronomy tools by Noel Carboni). rgds mkp

Hello, I am a devoted iMac user having first used one in my first job and had to endure the endless lock-ups and crashes of windows in subsequent years. I now own a lovely iMac (the hemispherical based one) and love it... Have to watch my windows trained wife with her double-clicking tendencies though when I 'allow' her use of it. Isn't that new Windows OS 'vista' is it just yet another Mac user platform rip-off??? (Must admit - we do have an old compaq notebook to play with Registax....God - help me to get to grips with this!!! and other windows only stuff) Going to get Photoshop for the Mac as the graphics power is way better! And files can be moved between windows and mac. But I have been playing around with shareware for stacking on the Mac. Namely --- Lynkeos and Astro Yacker. Both are freeware and although basic do the stacking and any other processing could be done in photoshop etc... Do a search and try them... Let us/ME know how you get on. Steve

Hi, Best thing to do is have a browse around at the following sites: www.macupdate.com www.versiontracker.com www.pure-mac.com/index.html Have a look at Celestia (free), Equinox (Shareware), Stellarium (free) and Starry Night Backyard (Commercial). Of those, I find Equinox very good, but I got Starry Night free on a magazine cover disk, so use that mostly. Stellarium is very good though.

Another thought - mainly because I just installed these myself. If you're feeling a bit adventurous you can try installing the Fink package, which will give you access to loads of open source software from the *nix world. Using that you can install a couple of pretty good free astro apps - XEphem is a pure Xwindows app, a bit clunky looking, but it does the job. There's also Kstars on the KDE system, which is quite a nice application. They cost nothing, bar a bit of time. Start here: http://fink.sourceforge.net/

Thanks for the replies everyone. Will check out the links. Apologies for the late reply but I had a death in the family and have been away from the computer for a couple of weeks. Cheers Dave
