Hi Gang,
I have just come across a fantastic new site that offers a free world wide telescope service. The service is run by Microsoft Research and allows the user free access to images and data from the major observatories around the globe. I am in the middle of downloading the software and will bring a report on the service very soon.Using the telescope you can create your own tours, add voice and text to slideshows, it looks like great fun! To view the service in the meantime go here http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/
John.

Hi Gang,
I have used Starry Night Pro Plus, Redshift 6, The Sky Pro 6 but I have got to say that this free World Wide Telescope is among the best software I have ever used. What's better than that is it is free, easy to use and is as fun to use as it is informative and bang up to date. Well done Microsoft! Download it now Gang.
John

i use the same software as you but i think  even stellarium  is at least 10x better than this world wide telescope. it is slow and  makes the "blue screen" restart the computer (google earth does this too)  but i can have all the other ones running at the same time with no problems.

I have to disagree Andrew but each to his own!
John.

I've tried it out. You need a fast internet connection otherwise the images take ages to load (I'm on a 512k slowband). Google sky is much quicker, but you can do a lot more with the microsoft software. The interface is a bit different and takes a bit of getting used to. I had to load a tour that explained how to use it before I could understand some of the controls. I did find that the sound volume of the tours very quiet and had to play one of them three times before I could understand what they were saying.  Haven't found a way of getting the names of the conselations to display yet either.

well after a directx headache and some strange behavoir got the wwt to work, ok it's beta so has some way to go but i like it. in fact i'd say looks rather promising for the future to have something which could have as many features as Starry Night pro plus for free, let's just remind ourselves how much pro plus is !!
hopefully they'll sort out a faster way of using the DSS servers and others in the future.

i currently use Starry Night Pro Plus, The SKY6 Pro, Stellarium with extras, Astroplanner, VMA Pro on PC and Astromist on the pocketpc.

Having had a "heads up" in a microsoft technet e-mail I just had a look at the latest Beta and liked what I saw...

Hopefully it will just get better and better...especially now that my PC is bloatware compatible....

And scope control via ASCOM....havent tried it yet though...

Billy...
